Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Tucked into Maryvale, Arizona, in a low socio-economic neighborhood, is a middle school trying to make a difference. Our students are low income students and our school is primarily free and reduced lunch as well as breakfast. We are running a program through Banner/Aetna to encourage our students to be more active and make healthier choices in their activities and their foods! Teachers are working with students to find exercise that they love as well as foods that are good for them (but also taste delicious).
Our school is a shining example of what good can be done when a group of teachers and staff come together to support the students.
We love our students and come to school everyday to ensure that they are ready for high school and prepared for the real world. Despite the difficulties that these students face every day outside of school, many are outstanding citizens themselves who are just looking for an outlet for all of their energy!
My Project
At our middle school, our students define what it means to overcome the odds. Many students have never played a sport in their lives, but have expressed the interest in learning how to improve their health and fitness. The materials and supplies that I am requesting are a great basis for a fitness club to help students learn how to exercise and make healthy choices. These supplies are tough and will withstand hundreds of students learning how to treat their body and grow stronger through sports and physical fitness. Students will be able to utilize the stability ball to improve their balance and overall strength. We chose various weights so that many different students of various levels of fitness can participate and reach their own personal fitness goals.
At our middle school, we want all students to learn and apply skills in their daily lives to curb childhood obesity and other potential health issues.
We want to teach our students that healthy choices are easy to make and fun! Fitness Club allows students of all ability levels to improve their own health and make a lifestyle change that could last well into their adult life.
