My Students

My students are in the 9th grade and are taking Exploring Computer Science (ECS). These students are thinking about high school graduation and want to do well. Exploring Computer Science is a foundation class that meets the digital studies credit requirement for high school graduation. Some students take this class to get the credit. Others take this class as a stepping stone to other computer science classes.

I have a diverse class both academically and culturally.

The class includes resource, ELL, and gifted and talented students. Students come with a wide variety of technical experience. Some students have little to no computer experience while others have built and programmed their own computers. Students like to collaborate and help each other use their creativity and expand their skills.

My Project

The standards for this class say that "students will create a project or program a physical device," and "identify and fix problems with the program or device."

Spheros provide a super fun, hands-on way to physically program and see the success or problem with their programming.

The COVID-19 pandemic has left my students spending most of their time using a computer or Chromebook in all of their classes. Using the Spheros will provide variety and depth to their programming experience.

This will not provide enough Spheros for each student to have their own, so, I plan to have the students work in partners or groups. This will give students opportunities to develop and practice the collaboration and communication skills that are needed in computer science and all aspects of life.
