I am a School Counselor and Dyslexia Coordinator at an elementary school in rural East Texas. Our students are loving, kind-hearted students who want to learn.
Some of our students have gone through trauma or chronic stress but they all show up with smiles on their faces and try to learn each day.
These students try their hardest every day but unfortunately some of them lack the skills and strategies to cope with life's struggles. They all come from different homes, ethnic backgrounds, and experiences. Teaching students not only academics, but also life skills can be difficult without the proper tools.
I would like to have tools easily accessible to all students in each classroom at our school. They will be able to use these pocket spellers at their desk during their writing time and not have any added anxiety about their spelling. They will also feel more confident in making stronger word choices instead of feeling as though they need to stick to words that they feel comfortable spelling.
My Project
I've been researching ways to provide resources and help for my dyslexic students.
I want them to feel successful in writing class and do not feel that their dyslexia takes away from their ability to produce quality writing.
My goal is to help them build confidence in their thoughts and what they are able to construct in their minds while they are writing. I want these students to feel confident in expanding their vocabulary and constructing well-thought out essays.
I feel that having pocket spellers available to each of my dyslexic students will help them feel more comfortable in their writing and allow them the ability to take more chances and make stronger word choices.
