This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you realize the importance of the computer in today's classroom and the world? We use computers for research, to look up current events and use educational web-sites. In order for my students to compete in the world, they must be technologically savvy!
I teach an enthusiastic and energetic group of first graders in an inner city TITLE I school.
We have twenty-six students in our class. The Computer Center is used so much in my classroom. The Weekly Reader (which we had donated through donorschoose.org) has an on-line edition each month that adds a lot of extra information that is not included in the paper issue. My students perceive time at the Computer Center as a reward. When the computers are broken, they are so disappointed.
My Project
My students are highly motivated to do educational web-sites at the Computer Center. With twenty-six students, it is an area in which I believe that they can be actively engaged in learning, while I work with other students in small groups. Our new reading and writing standards call for students to use "digital technology" for research. The laptop would be a wonderful way for them to research! As an educator, I'm always trying to improve my craft. I've learned about a method of doing my plan book on-line that I'm eager to use...on a reliable classroom computer. This will benefit my lesson planning and therefore the students because it has the state standards on web site. What a terrific way to ensure that we're meeting all of the state standards. As educators, we've been told that we are preparing our students for "college or career." Today and in the future, computers will surely be a part of both college and careers.
Please help me update my older model computers that break down so often.
The repairman came to my classroom the day before the students started school and told me that he was told by his superiors to advise me to "purchase new computers." My computers are so old that they are no longer making replacement parts. Due to severe budget cuts to education, my school is unable to purchase new computers. Please help my students stay in the technology loop!
