This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are energetic, curious and brilliant. They come from a low-income, under-resourced, neglected school community. Despite this, they attend school each day ready to learn. I remind them everyday that we are the best classroom in Cleveland and everyday they prove me right! They deserve the best.
My kids are future mayors, doctors, scientists, teachers, writers, actors, and lawmakers!
This year my second graders will be focusing on creativity, leadership, and transferable skills that they will use for the rest of their lives
.
By the end of this year, my students will learn to work together and become productive contributors to the development of their own community. They will take responsibility for their learning and growth and I will do my best to support them in whatever way they need.
My Project
Many of the students and families my school services are beneficiaries of SNAP, the food stamp program. Families just received their February SNAP benefits (earlier than usual) and will not receive any more benefits until the government shutdown is over- and who knows when that will be?
Kids can't learn on an empty stomach, nor should they have to.
I want to keep my classroom stocked with healthy snacks to ensure that hunger doesn't hinder my scholars' education. My kids already receive free breakfast and lunch due to the socioeconomic status of the community we are in, but often these meals are not enough.
I don't want to create a narrative in which my students appear to be charity cases, however, I am genuinely concerned about their food security, a basic human right, which is already insufficient and is only being intensified by the shutdown. I've been buying them snacks myself but the anticipated need is far more than I can afford alone. I need your help!
If you'd like to support my scholars, please consider a donation to this project!
