Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide a sparkling, engaging classroom with all the bells and whistles. I want my students to love their school and take pride in their classroom and have the tools they need to succeed.
My students are eager, energetic and spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and crave positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". I may not be able to control their home lives, but I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic success.
My Project
The cardstock paper and laminator will allow me to print and laminate sight words and place them on rings which will provide more hands-on opportunities which will keep my busy kindergartners engaged for the whole school year. These materials will provide them with a variety of ways to learn sight words that are taught in small groups and whole class. Hands-on learning is the most effective way to retain information opposed to just lectures and worksheets. They will also develop a mastery to be able to work independently and to be successful learners, all at their own pace building their confidence. With these materials, students will be given the opportunity to have their list of sight words readily available to use at all times.
Students can practice their color-coded, laminated sight words with their friends.
They also are learning the importance of studying with note cards at an early age.
They are such curious learners and get so excited each time they learn new words. These materials will be providing them the opportunity to have the words readily available which will enhance both their reading and writing. These materials will also increase their reading fluency. If they can decode and identify sight words rapidly, they will have more time to decode words that are not found commonly. Thank you so much for your support and investment in the future of my Kindergarten classroom!
