This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Currently, I teach fifth grade in a high poverty, urban, public school.

My students live in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods that require support and resources for learning.

My classroom population is ninety percent minority with more than half being English language learners.

My students are beyond amazing! They come from a variety of countries that include Nigeria, Ethiopia, Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Mexico. They work so hard to not only master the necessary fifth grade curriculum, but also the English language. Many of them come from single family homes with hardworking families who are struggling to make it.

My Project

Teaching reading to 130+ students has so many advantages and some challenges. One of the challenges is having enough books for my classroom library for students to check out. My fifth graders are loving books that a part of a series right now. They are so engaged and I cannot keep them in enough of my kiddos' hands. They are so disappointed when there aren't any more books available that are a part of a series. WIth the help of this project, I will be able to give more students the opportunity to check these titles out and ensure that they continue on their journey of being a book lover.
