Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher at an alternative program in my district. My position is the kindergarten through second grade P.E.E.R teacher (Promoting Education, Emotional Adjustment and Responsibility). This program gives me the privilege to work with students across kindergarten through eighth grade. These students have a wide range of emotional disabilities and they struggle with controlling their aggression and lack the ability to access their coping or "cool down" skills.
My students are the reason I am excited to go to work every single day.
Despite the fact that many of them have experienced some form of trauma at a very young age, have mental or emotional disabilities and lack the resources to help them be successful. They still come to school every single day eager and excited to learn. They are often overlooked or underestimated because of their disabilities. For the majority of the students on my campus, school is regarded as a safe place.
My Project
The items being asked for in this project will impact my students' abilities to be more successful in the classroom, both behaviorally and academically.
Flex seating allows my students to be more comfortable and engaged in their learning without leaving the security of the classroom.
The beanbag chairs allow my students to freely move around the room during independent reading times or when they don't feel comfortable at their desks during direct instruction.
The sand and water table offer a sensory input opportunity to my students which is hands-on and it serves as an outlet for them. My students thrive on the opportunity to get up and move around the classroom. This table allows them to do just that while working on utilizing self-coping skills to learn what they need.
