Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is made up of amazing, brave, hard working little individuals who come to school each day with smiles on their faces. They persevere as they learn in a language that is not native to them or their families, and make amazing progress throughout the year. Many of my students end up being the first person in their family to learn how to read and write in either language. We are a Title I school. My students still come in each day with a smile and find comfort in the familiarity and routine of learning at school.
They deserve a calm, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment where every student has what they need to feel safe and thrive.
Primary students are still learning how to regulate emotions and impulses, focus, and self-reflect. As we teach them these skills as a part of Social Emotional Learning, the success of some students is heavily impacted by the environment.
My Project
Some general education students have sensory disabilities that go unnoticed to most people. Some examples of these disabilities are ASD, Sensory processing disorder,hearing/vision struggles, and students experiencing trauma. Students with ADHD will also benefit from a calm environment.
Following the idea of universal design, I believe that a sensory friendly classroom will benefit all students, not just those who require it.
Students will benefit from a calm environment in relation to sound, lighting, aromas, and calming visuals.
Classroom florescent lighting emits a “flicker,” which can trigger nervous system events like migraines, tics, or seizures in sensitive individuals. I am asking for light filters to improve the overhead lighting.
A white noise machine will help students who are sensitive to sounds. Our portable classroom amplifies small sounds and movements, making it difficult for many students to focus. I am asking for some noise reducing headphones for students to use during independent work time.
I am asking for a set of small sand timers for my students who struggle with focus to manage and track work time independently based on individual goals.
I am asking for some liquid motion toys to put in a "Reset and Return" corner for students to calm themselves when struggling with emotions.
When basic needs are met such as a sense of safety, love, and belonging, then children are able to focus on learning.
