Help me give my students the ability to learn academic vocabulary through the context of high-interest science magazines. Scholastic Science has articles, pictures, and activities that 3rd graders LOVE! What better way to get them to read more.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a public charter school that serves a community of students who mostly live in the surrounding projects. They have limited experiences outside the classroom. They enjoy coming to school every day in order to feel safe, successful, and cared-for.
My students have so many varied interests and it's lovely to see what motivates them.
The students here grow up together and treat each other like family. There parents definitely set that example for them. Furthermore, the families here truly value education and have a lot of respect for the school, teachers, and our mission to educate their children.
These 8 year olds work so hard every day to achieve their goals in all the different subjects that are taught in elementary school.
My Project
When students come to the third grade, most of what they learn is all new material. It can be extremely challenging. One way to meet that challenge is to provide high-interest materials so that they enjoy what they are reading.
These Scholastic Science magazines will be used to teach the various standards that they will need to know about nonfiction text such as text structure and features.
This vocabulary is easier to learn when there are multiple examples throughout the year.
Plus, when a student finds a new topic of interest, they want to learn more about it, so they will read more naturally.
