Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My dual language students love to learn new Spanish vocabulary and vice-versa! In order to learn Spanish words for science concepts we use many visuals. Students learn cognate words and amplify their Spanish vocabulary. I would like kids to be confident in learning content area vocabulary.
I teach 44 students Science in Spanish.
Students come from diverse backgrounds. Many students have the advantage of exposure to museums, science literature, etc..However, many more do not come from literate families and do not have the exposure to museums and scientific knowledge at home. Science is a fun subject when it is hands-on, but we also read in Spanish and study difficult concepts. Students learn concepts and language concurrently which is a challenge. The background knowledge is limited for more than half of my students and I am anxious to teach them the curriculum and foster their curiosity in Science. My school supports learning for all, but additional resources in Spanish would benefit my dual language students.
My Project
When we are beginning a unit in science, students are introduced to the new vocabulary. A picture/word dictionary in both English and Spanish would be a great resources for them! By seeing an image next to vocabulary, learning would be greatly enhanced.
Students would be able to easily consult the dictionary when there is a class set available to them. Currently I have one copy which is in high demand. Students will use the dictionaries to work in their science workbooks and their science journals. They will consult the dictionary freely when necessary. I think learning will be very much improved because of having this fundamental resource!
Donations for this project would help two classes to improve in the subject of science.
Students are learning Spanish and English also and language depends on building a greater vocabulary. The challenge is to learn language and subject matter concurrently. The dictionaries would be used on a daily basis and would help create proficient learners of science.
