This year in my fourth grade classroom I will be teaching an entire unit on the Scientific Method. This unit will be so exciting for both myself and the students because of one thing...they will get to choose what they study! I have a unique classroom because I will be with the same students as last year (I am looping to the next grade with my class). That's a huge advantage because I already know what will get their gears going! They LOVE science, and they especially love conducting science experiments. Last year, we did several experiments together as a class and it was so neat to see the hands-on learning experience in action. This year, I am going to expose them to the scientific method and then allow them to create their own science project. In order for my students to be able to decide what they want to study, I feel that they need to be exposed to a wide variety of possible projects. Through our reading workshop, I will expose them to several different inventors and ideas for science projects. In order to do this, I will need several copies of science project books for the students to browse, read, research and choose from in order to complete their projects. The culminating activity for this unit will be a school-wide Science Fair, where winning projects will go on to compete at the area and then city level. My students love to learn and compete...so it's a winning combination! I want my students to have the best experience that I can give them, because learning how to develop questions, test and then analyze results is a life skill that they can apply to almost anything. Thank you for considering this proposal.
