My students live in a small town located in a former mill village with generations of families remaining in this close-knit community (population 2,192). Our student body consists of 430 seventh and eighth graders who come from diverse backgrounds. 60% of our students come from a low socio-economic background. Our classrooms provide opportunities from a co-teaching inclusion model to high school credit courses. Our school has addressed the "digital divide" by providing 1:1 Chromebooks for each student and was selected to pilot Google's Dynamic Learning Project which provides an embedded technology coach on-site to assist teachers and students with impactful usage of technology.
We maintain a global perspective by providing students with a competitive education and opportunities to connect beyond their community.
These students work hard despite their low socio-economic background and deserve opportunities to explore the world beyond this small town.
My Project
The paper cutter, tape, tape dispenser, and Pencil sharpener will allow the students to create in the classroom without worrying about the lack of their personal school supplies. We do many activities in science and students are more likely to want to use new supplies rather than "hunt" for pre-existing, worn supplies. They love to add color and embellishments to make their work stand out.
Seventh grade is a difficult grade and anything I can offer the students in my classroom is extremely helpful.
We will do many study skills strategies with these materials. Many students are able to learn better when items are in color and in their own handwriting. These strategies will help them throughout the rest of their school careers.
