The students at our school are amazing, resilient young people. Most of them come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and many of them have faced some type of trauma in their lives already. Despite all that, they are so happy to come to school.
On Thursday, November 8th that all changed.
School had just started, when we were suddenly notified that we needed to evacuate due to a rapidly approaching fire that started in a nearby town. Everyone thought we would evacuate and see each other the next day. We were wrong!
By evening we knew that our town had been wiped out by this catastrophic event and most of our students and teachers had lost their homes. It was literally gone! I am writing this DonorsChoose.org project on behalf of my students, as our school had been destroyed as well. Not a classroom left standing, all books and supplies gone!
We just completed our first week back to school and it was awesome to see these students. We will help each other and be STRONG for one another.
My Project
We are requesting magnetic wands, bar magnets, Dowling Mysterious Magnet Tube and a STEM bundle for grades 2-3. STEM resources are so important for hands-on learning. These magnets and other STEM resources will provide our students with relevant learning to their world around them.
My students lost all their science materials and we would love to replace some of them.
Magnetism is part of our Third grade science curriculum so these will allow my students to explore and discover their properties.
The STEM set will give them real world experiences in which they can create, problem solve and be engaged in their learning. It also allows for collaborative learning. All of these skills are important for preparing students for life after school.
