Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small agricultural town with a lot of people. It is a close-knit community. There is a strong connection between the school and community, all the teachers know all the families, and everyone shares a value for this community. Unfortunately, since this is such a small town, the school does not have enough funds for many extracurricular programs or additional academic projects.
My students have developed an unquenchable thirst for science; they are creative, analytical, and enthusiastic.
I teach a science lab class for elementary students in grades 1-4. I see around 500 or more students every week in my science lab. The classes come to my lab once a week for hands-on science activities. I like to keep this lab very student-driven and open-ended so that the students get the chance to really explore and investigate scientific concepts. I also try to make my lab as authentic as possible. I have some lab equipment such as safety goggles, cylinders, and test tubes, and the kids just love using real science equipment. All of my students have taken a particular shine to chemistry.
My Project
Right now the students are using typical classroom four leg chairs. If they had stools instead of chairs they would spend less time moving their seats around, we won't need to spend time pushing the chairs back in, and they will always have the option to stand up. Having stools will also make table rotations much smoother. No more sliding chairs in and out of the tables, no more students tripping over chairs that didn't get tucked in.
Having stools in the science lab will make the students' experience more memorable and authentic.
If the students truly feel as if they are in a science laboratory, they will treat it as such.
