Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach to a large group of knowledge-hungry 4th graders. Situated in a high poverty area, these kids try to escape the daily adversities that are the realities of their lives. Most of these students come to school with no supplies to help them absorb the knowledge that the world has to offer.
Many students love to read and learn about what is going on in our world.
However, their parents are busy struggling to keep up with buying food or paying the rent, and ordering newspapers or magazines is the last thing on their mind. Some parents are so busy that they aren't even able to support their child who is reading at below grade level.
My Project
As a science teacher who teaches to almost 180 students, I would like to supply my students with classroom magazines called SuperScience. They are great for reinforcing science and literacy skills. The magazines provide fascinating science news, nonfiction articles, fictional mysteries, and hands-on activities that will motivate my students to think like scientists. They also include test prep reading strategies and questions that my students will benefit for the state English Language Arts (ELA) exam and the state Science exam as well as for the rest of their life. I would also like 15 subscriptions to Scholastic News Grade 3 for my lower level readers.
In the past I have tried to collect the subscription fees from each parent but only a small percentage could contribute.
The students whose parents could afford it were so enthusiastic and excited about the periodical that they wouldn't put it down. And the students whose parents couldn't afford the periodical would watch with sadness. Won't you give the opportunity for all students to read and appreciate the world around us?
