My students thrive on hands-on activities. They love to be interactive with learning. These kids come all different backgrounds. When my students enter the library, they are always willing and confident to have a great time with me! What I love about these kids is their heart and desire. If I get excited about a project, they will too. Students in elementary school are on a block rotation schedule, that means they visit the library once a week for a 56 minute period. They are able to visit during open library time as well.
Students at our school are underprivileged as well as underexposed to many things outside of our little town.
Especially the elementary students. So many things are new and innovative to them that it is so exciting to watch them in the library when new technology is introduced.
The junior high and high school students have a very different scenario regarding the library schedule. They are able to visit between classes or if a teacher schedules a specific time.
My Project
We are asking for the donation of a Microsoft Go for many reasons. One being that we incorporated a new program this year called Super Scanners. This program is a reading incentive program that allows students to check out books or act as in the librarian for the day based on tests passed in the Accelerated Reader program for the week. They are thrilled about the opportunity to use the equipment I use daily and help be the support system to check out books. The second reason is for self-check out. Allowing students to check out books on their own, gives me the opportunity to be free to help patrons in the library. One of our biggest hang-ups in the library is when I have a line of students ready to check out but someone needs help locating a book, help with a project, or wants to display or explain something from their makerspace building time. Freeing up check out time for me would help so much with allowing productivity to help within the library time limits I am given.
