Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, but they all have one thing in common.
My students are all excited, young learners, beginning a journey toward a lifelong love of music.
Some of them are from families who are able to provide them with all the materials and opportunities they need to succeed; others have parents who must work at least two jobs just to provide for their basic needs. As a result, some of my students have the things they need in band to perform well, while others must use what the school can provide. Some of these young performers go home to supportive families, who encourage them to practice and do well, while others must go home and help care for their younger siblings and other family members, sometimes not seeing their parents for several days at a time. My amazing students are all supportive of one another, and encourage each other, daily, to do their very best work. They eagerly collaborate in every class, and band is no exception.
My Project
Our band program is growing faster than our instrument inventory. Our band numbers doubled this year alone! My students need a new alto saxophone in order to allow us to play in band class.
So many students in my school wish they could join band, but don't have the resources that would allow them to rent or purchase an instrument.
Not only would this give them an opportunity to perform concert band music, but saxophones are also included in many other styles of music, including jazz, mariachi, and even pop. A new alto saxophone, in my band room, will help my students connect what we are doing in school, to what they like to listen to outside of school, as well.
