This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The world of reading could change for my third students with an infusion of technology into our classroom.
"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." - Anne Frank.
As an educator and lifelong reader, there's nothing more exciting than watching children become hooked on reading.
"Superheroes" is our school's theme this year and I have two groups of third graders, eighteen in the morning and eighteen in the afternoon who are my superheroes. I tell my students everyday that their superpower is READING and that they can become SUPER READERS! But even the best superhero often needs a little boost of technology.
The school I work in is a Title I school and about one third of my students are learning English as a Second Language. Many of the students I teach do not have access to a computer or the Internet at home. All students need the opportunity to improve their reading skills through district approved computer programs on a consistent basis.
My Project
Using computers in the classroom can provide my students with individualized reading experiences at their ability level, whether they need intervention, are on grade level, or need enrichment. Presently, in my classroom, there are three computers for eighteen students. With the addition of four laptops, the goal of 30 minutes daily on a computer for each student has a greater chance of becoming a reality. Laptops could also be used as a learning center during differentiated instruction in our Language Arts/Reading block. Students will learn vocabulary and reading comprehension, as well as critical thinking skills. The third graders will also learn beginning keyboarding skills in preparation for future writing assessments, which must be typed on the computer. Additionally, the Internet can be used as a research tool for class activities and reports.
Kids love working at the computer!
Technology is a tool that can motivate even the most reluctant reader. As more of our daily lives revolve around technology, it is crucial that students be comfortable and competent in the use of computers. It is my goal to, in some small way, prepare my superhero SUPER READERS to be the critical thinkers and problem solvers of the future.
