This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Ms. G, I didn't do my reading homework because I don't have any books at home." That statement broke my heart! To think that a child has nothing to read at home was both depressing and motivating. This project's goal is to get enough books for every student in my class to read at home every night.
Our school is a great little school with only a few classes per grade level.
It's an inner city, public school located in the middle of a neighborhood. After getting to know my students, I learned that 86% of them read below grade level and most of them do not have books at home. Even though my students are low academically, they all have the motivation to read and the desire to learn, they just don't have books to read at home. With the requested books, students will be able to practice reading on a nightly basis and strengthen their reading ability.
My Project
To get these kids reading at home, I am requesting books that are on their reading level. With enough books, I can send reading materials home each night with every student. I no longer want the lack of books at home to prevent my students from reading. With your generous donation, my students will have books to take home every night and read at home. Some of the books that I have requested come from amazing authors like Ann Cameron, Roald Dahl, and Eric Carle.
In addition, I requested book bins to store the books (for check out and return each day - like a library) and a pencil sharpener so that students can write about what they read in their nightly reading log homework.
This project is important to me because I think that every student deserves a good book to read at home.
It really does take a village to raise a child and with your help, I can inspire the next generation of children to love reading. This will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
