I am proud to teach an active, creative and inquisitive bunch of Kindergarten through fifth grade resource students. We are a well-rounded class that includes ESOL students, students with learning and emotional disabilities, as well as students who have other health impairments such as ADHD.
I am continually inspired by their determination to succeed and the motivation they provide one another.
Each and every success, whether small or large, is celebrated. My students understand that they each have a variety of abilities and can use those abilities to reach their goals!
My Project
My students are learning to be super readers! Many of them have difficulty with decoding and comprehending grade-level text. This means that they often have limited book choices. Sometimes they feel babyish reading simple phonics readers or leveled passages. I would like to provide my students with books from Scholastic's Branches series. These books are easy readers with fun and engaging plots. Not only will these books increase my students' confidence, but they will also help them apply the reading skills they learn in class. I had a student who was a very reluctant reader. I seemed to introduce every book's series to him; however, he was not interested and was often frustrated by their reading level.
When I gave him one of the Branches books, Kung Pow Chicken, he was instantly captivated!
He was so excited about the book that he read ahead for homework all by himself. He and his classmates would love to continue reading this series in order to build their reading skills! Please help my students access age-appropriate books so that they can discover the love of reading!
