My students need books that peak their interest. Graphic novels tend to draw in reluctant readers. Once students catch the bait, I’m then able to introduce them to different genres.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr. Seuss continues to remind us all about the importance of reading. Children who find a love in reading are more apt to find success in life. Good readers make good writers and thinkers.
There is nothing that I love more than helping a student find a book they love that makes them want to come back for more.
Many of the students I work with don’t have books at home and if I can provide a literature rich environment where students have the opportunity to have the best literature out there that encourages them to read, then I have done part of my job.
As Elizabet Scott stated “I love that moment when you open a book and sink into it you can escape from the world into a story that’s way more interesting than yours will ever be”. Reading can be magical and I look forward to providing that opportunity for my students.
My Project
Not all students have experienced the joy of reading. By using graphic novels to introduce students to the love of reading, I can then expose them to a variety of genres available in our school’s media center. Many of the graphic novels that we have are in poor condition and I can’t seem to keep the books that are in decent condition on the shelf. Graphic novels provide not only a love for words and reading, but realistic illustrations that motivate students to read. Many of the graphic novels I chose have real life storylines that students can relate to.
