Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Though we face challenges in our high-needs school, I am nonetheless endeavoring to create rich, meaningful learning experiences for our children. I want to ensure that our students of all backgrounds are able to access our curriculum and cultivate their learning skills.
My 1st graders are filled with brilliance.
They are each unique individuals who are enthusiastic about learning. Many love to build, play with their peers, and challenge themselves. These children are capable of empathy, wonderful creativity, and critical thinking.
My Project
All students have unique needs. They learn best when teachers can individualize learning in small groups and conferences. I want to make sure students have lessons that are specially tailored to them. Imagine students learning with their teacher to meet their specific needs and challenge them in just the right way. Now, imagine having the tools to push their thinking further.
With this project, I can ensure there is more engaging, targeted learning in my classroom.
My plan is to utilize these materials to create small group rotations of 3-4 learners. In this system, I will be able to craft extremely effective lessons to address my kids' specific academic needs. With these literacy puzzles, for instance, my students who are below grade level will have the opportunity to improve their reading skills. The materials here will help them build their phonemic awareness and letter-sound recognition in our reading groups. Matching letters to sounds is key to reading and writing, and our tactile puzzles will give them the visual support. With math tools like number lines and games, my students and I will also be able to develop strategies to add and subtract with accuracy and fluency. Number lines are also wonderful as a visual to enhance their number sense. These are all important parts of 1st grade, but learned and honed in fun, meaningful ways.
In addition, the tools in this project promote teamwork among students. I believe students should be learning to work together and make learning a collaborative experience for all. These materials can help do all of this. I hope my project can come to life to support my students in building the foundational skills they need in the 1st grade and for life.
