My students are a very diverse group of children with one thing in common - they all attend an urban, public Montessori school. Eighty-one percent of the students qualify for free lunch and 88% of the students are a racial minority.
We follow the teachings of Maria Montessori to meet the needs of the whole child - physically, emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually through following and allowing the child to guide his or her learning.
I am fortunate to be in a school that sees music as an integral part of the child's development and encourages musical growth and expression.
My Project
I am so fortunate to teach in a school that believes in the value of all children. This school year several children with sensory needs have joined our school community. Noise cancelling headphones and weighted lap animals would help make school a more pleasant place for them to learn and grow.
I want my students to enjoy school and music class, but because of how they experience sound my class can be difficult.
With the noise cancelling headphones, my sensory avoiders would have a better chance of enjoying our (sometimes) loud music experiences. The weighted stuffed dog will provide sensory input that is calming to my students who struggle to stay in their seats.
