My current students are 4th grade super stars! We have a state competition in which students read a series of books presented by the state. These books range from a 3rd grade to a 5th grade level. If a child reads a book and then earns a 70 or higher on the comprehension book, they get credit. If students read three books, they attend a voting party. If students read 10 of the books, they earn a gift certificate to our school's book fair.
During this past year, 21 out of 23 students earned the party.
In my second class, 16 out of 20 students earned the party. This was by far the most representation from our grade level. However, last year we had sets of books in our classroom for students to borrow and read in class. I'd like to make that possible again.
My Project
If I am able to have copies of these selected books, such as Pablo and Cat, Wish, and Dragons and Marshmallows in my classroom, students can have them at their fingertips at all times.
The library has copies, but 3-6 graders are all trying to earn the same rewards, so having a class set will make it more accessible and give my class a better chance at participating in the program.
This year, 90% of my homeroom students were able to participate in the competition because I had the books available in my classroom. Unfortunately, the books change every year, so I am need of the new titles.
