My students are amazing! Their love for learning and each other is an infectious motivator to push them to strive for the best. They come from all walks of life. Just by glancing at their smiling and eager faces, you would not immediately know the daily challenges so many of them face. Many come from divided households, newly immigrated to this country, or struggle with coping with a sick or absent parent at home. Their hearts and minds are open to reading, math, writing, science, and any new experience that can be presented to them during the school day. School is their safe haven and where they come to be themselves and more importantly better themselves. To give to this group of students means giving to some of the future's greatest individuals. The promise they offer the world is limitless.
My Project
Every year students at our school are challenged to read all 15 of the Sunshine State books. Achieving this goal not only exposes the students to quality literature, but allows them to set and achieve a long term academic goal. The determination needed to be successful at the challenge is an amazing confidence and character builder. Historically, students who are able to complete the challenge not only develop a lifelong love of reading, but also perform outstanding on statewide Reading assessments. It’s something that will give them pride and a sense of accomplishment. It helps them grow as both readers and learners!
