Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Rotten tomatoes. Movie critics? Or just bad produce? In an area surrounded by agriculture, many of our students are disconnected from their food. Our garden is intended to restore that connection, invite learning and growth.... and hopefully a couple of fresh tomatoes.
Our high school is in an urban, low-socioeconomic area in California with an extremely diverse population: Hmong, Asian, Latino, African-American and Caucasian with a student population of 3,300.
Many of our students struggle outside of school, yet bring optimism and charisma to the classroom. Their families are often field workers and so have a negative perspective on farming. This garden will challenge their perspective and invite new dialogue, curiosity and learning. The culinary, health and science classes will use the garden as a hands-on learning environment to support classroom activities. School clubs will maintain the garden by planting, harvesting and (even) designing the layout. The garden will inspire new student leaders, bringing a new kind of "growth" to our school.
My Project
We are asking for tools: shovels, loop hoes and shears. These tools will provide the basic gardening equipment to start harvesting and prepping the soil. We will store them safely and use them throughout the seasons. These tools will help bring our garden to life, providing a hands-on learning experience that is effective, realistic and (of course) fun. In science classrooms they will learn about the pH of soil, plant genetics, composting and microbiology, while the culinary class will have the opportunity to pick fresh herbs and produce. Health class can use the food as a demo, discussing the importance of healthy food choices. Over time, many students will be impacted by the garden.
This garden is all about growth and connection.
The garden will grow food for our students to become more connected with what they eat. It will shape them into leaders and peer-educators, bringing new connections between each other, their food and themselves.
