Help me give my students the supplies and opportunity to discover cyanotypography while we learn about solar power. The students will love taking home the solar prints to share with their families.
I have the privilege to teach the honors reading class and the gifted and talented program at our school. One of my favorite things about teaching this group is how they tend to be experts in one area or another. While one student knows nearly everything about animals, another student knows most everything about technology.
My students are high achieving and high level students that greatly enjoy enrichment in our gifted and talented program.
I strive to vary the enrichment offered in order to speak to those that have a great deal of strength in that area as well as introduce something new to others. One of the most difficult things about teaching this amazing group of students is not only finding those topics that speak to the various students but also funding those new topics.
My Project
Students will participate in a scavenger hunt for leaves, flowers, feathers, and other items. They will place the findings inside a photo frame while creating a design of his/her choice. Students will close the frame with a piece of solar printing paper pressing on the items.
To create the cyanotype prints, the frames are exposed to sunlight for 10 minutes and then returned to the table to process the paper.
The sheets of paper are placed inside a plastic tub of water. After a few minutes, the paper will turn blue except for the area they placed items... those areas turn white.
