My Students
Not having access to books to read during the long summer days and months. That is the reality facing my students. They do not own books and are unable to check books out for the public library for various reasons.
My students come from low socio-economic homes. They do not have access to reading materials in their homes and often are not brought to the public library in order to find reading material. Outside of school, they are not surrounded by books; they do not have text rich home lives.
My Project
Do you remember the first book you actually owned-that was given to you as a gift? Book ownership changes lives. I want my students to continue to read and get lost in the characters they have come to love during the school year. Mercy Watson, Ricky Ricotta, Stink, Poppelton, The Magic Tree House. These are books which have captured my struggling students imagination. I want this love affair to continue over the summer.
We know students skills decline over the summer. If we can get books into kids' hands for them to read than this decline will be less detrimental to the students' learning next fall. We also know book ownership changes lives. Please lets put books into student's hands, not just during the school year, but ALL year long!
