Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The excitement of "Fun Friday" isn't just once a week...it's everyday. This year my students requested more STEAM such as science and art experiments, as well as computer activities. Many of our new resources are used on a daily basis during free choice time.
Our students come to school with many concerns outside of their control.
In our classroom, we utilize teamwork and social skills to the fullest potential. Our school is a small school making a big difference for students who have been placed in our building for various personal or private reasons. Many of them do not have "typical" experiences prior to entering the school system. Here, they receive additional resources and opportunities such as a smaller class size, as well as strategies for social and emotional learning in addition to academic skills.
My Project
My students are enjoying all of the fantastic new books and supplies that we have received during this school year! In fact, they are becoming more familiar with the process of creating thank you notes because they are grateful, not just because their teacher asks them to. During a recent writing session, students asked if we'd be getting any more items before the school year ended. I told them..."you never know". We brainstormed a list of items that would be most enjoyable for the next 7 weeks. I told them that we might have to wait until summer school or next year to get them. They understood and I know that their hearts desire these classroom items very much.
The most commonly requested item in my classroom is not candy or toys, but books!
The students asked about more Elephant & Piggie books. They wanted Curious George stories as we only have two in our room currently. They asked for more super hero stories so I am requesting two different "5 minute stories" books.
Some of their favorite activities involve Hot Wheels cars. They share the cars, race the cars, compare the cars, create obstacles for the cars and write about the cars in their journals. I requested a few more cars and several feet of track (which we do not have in our room...yet).
The final items are Chewelry. These chew-able necklaces were introduced to us by a classmate who used them appropriately and other classmates wanted to try the stress item for various reasons. But, an item such as this cannot be shared. So, I'm requesting enough that each student who wanted one can try one.
