Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I've been an educator here at Hickey Elementary School for the past 6 years. Although this is a Title 1 Tier 1 school in a low income area, the students and families we serve are resilient and desire a quality education.
In an immigrant community of mostly Spanish speakers, language proficiency and cultural awareness are vital pieces to building rapport with families and making a lasting impact on students.
Around 70% of student families identify as “Hispanic,” and many of those students are English Language Learners (ELL). At times, meeting their needs requires some level of Spanish speaking ability. Hundreds of families in our surrounding area know me by name because of my involvement in our local community. For example, in addition to teaching elementary, I’m also one of the Saturday-school teachers for ELL students at our feeder high-school, Sunrise Mountain High School.
My Project
Whether it's parent teacher conferences or general classroom instruction, on a daily basis I find that Spanish language is a necessity when communicating with students and parents. Any teacher serving in a "high risk" area with a large Spanish speaking population is in critical need of some level of Spanish proficiency.
This intensive summer of learning and immersion will support me in providing meaningful instruction to ALL students as well as better engage Spanish speaking parents, making them feel included in our classroom and school community.
Successful completion of the Middlebury Language School - Summer Language program will make me a better educator, allow me to better collaborate with our Spanish speaking parents, and broaden my overall impact for students and families.
