For the 2018-2019 school year, I have 16 students with lots of energy. Between carpet time and small group learning stations my classroom involves a lot of movement.
My goal is for students to be lifelong learners.
I have had the opportunity to work in a Title I school for the past three years, giving me the chance to work with students and parents from different backgrounds. Throughout the year, my classroom becomes not only a community of learners but a family. As an educator, one challenge that I face is not having all the materials that I need to help promote independence in students and to promote student success.
My Project
These materials are being requested to begin a partnership with parents to insure that they are reading to their child at home during the summer months. The books would be passed out during our end of the year awards program for my class. During this time, I will stress the importance of keeping their child reading and for parents to read aloud to them, while they are out of school during the summer. Along with these books, a bookmark will be provided to go with them that gives strategies for students to use while they are reading.
“Experts agree that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not, often slide backwards.” Reading is Fundamental (2015) I want to avoid the summer slide with my students and keep their love for reading alive!
