This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Mitchell Kapor once said, "ÃÂÃÂGetting information off the Internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant." My students come to class every day excited to learn more, but our limited access to resources results in an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. This project could change that.
I teach at a neighborhood school in Detroit, MI that encourages the use of technology in the classroom.
Through a small schools initiative started several years ago, we are a smaller high school consisting of approximately 300 students of which, 99% are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. My students have a strong curiosity for learning and are excited for the programs we have planned for them this summer.
My Project
This summer, in addition to holding our regular summer academic programs, we will also have a bridge program for incoming 9th graders to get a head start in their high school education and electives for current students entering grades 10-12. Programs will include foundational courses in math, science, English and foreign languages to prepare incoming students for high school level work.
These Macbooks will become a resource center for my students to access in the classroom. My students will be required to conduct research for projects and complete exercises through the online program, Duolingo; a platform that teaches students Spanish through written, aural, and oral assignments and assessments. Students will also create presentations and compile a portfolio of their work utilizing iWorks and Microsoft Office programs. Students will gain a more thorough understanding of the Spanish language and exposure to the culture and history that is essential to learning a second language.
My school's textbooks are outdated, and we barely have enough of them to stock a single classroom.
Resources are limited and my students deserve access to technology that will afford them a wealth of information at their fingertips.
