This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are dealing with many difficulties. Besides being in a high poverty area with many single-parent families, families in crisis, and a high percentage of students with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as a large population of English language learners, many have limited life experiences due to these issues. This deficit affects more than the experiential realm, it also causes students to have a limited vocabulary, and reduced engagement in school.
In addition, we receive new students daily who frequently move between our three emerging schools in Lafayette Parish.
In spite of these upheavals, they are expected to learn at the same rate as their peers nationally, and yet, our schools are experiencing an unprecedented population growth, as well as a budget crisis!
My Project
I work with 3 schools that are considered "emerging". Our students come from high poverty and are traditionally among the lowest achievers in our parish. As a result, much of our emphasis is placed on the struggling learners. Our on and above level students can often be overlooked in this scenario. We want to amend this.
This summer in an effort to address this frequently under-addressed population, our parish is offering a free enrichment day camp for the on and above level learners of our emerging schools!
Our camp will be divided into 4 thematic units that will include STEAM, writing, art, broadcasting, and career explorations activities. The supplies requested, will be used to foster creativity, boldness, and communication and writing skills. For example, some of the projects include, "save the baby" floatation devices, creating crystal names, building a better balloon car, creating bubbles and bubble makers, and many other activities! We will then use various Google platforms to write about our experiences.
