Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
MES, located in the Montbello community, is a proud Denver Public School which serves a student population that is 95% low-income, 98% minority, 62% English Language Learners, 9% Special Education students and 100% college bound. School enrollment has grown over time, (and is now at full capacity), due to consistent improvement in school quality and we are now nearing almost 750 students. We are an innovation school, with extended day and extended year. MES is a really incredible place– we have shown significant growth in the past four years since turnaround, catapulting ourselves from one of the lowest-performing schools to the 8th in the state for growth. On the recently released data, we had the highest growth in our district in literacy of all elementary schools, (growing 31 percentiles).
My Project
The Summer Bridge workbooks have been around for years and effectively kept kids engaged in learning while away from school. These books will allow our kids to not only avoid the Summer slide, but grow as students and individual learners. The books involve reading comprehension, grammar, math, writing, and fitness activities of all sorts.
Our students need this extra work and accountability to close the achievement gap and become grade level learners.
We will check in with them twice during the summer to have a pizza party and review their progress on assignments. Our kids really want to keep learning and advancing, but without the proper resources, this will not occur. Please support this project.
