Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need activities that will entertain and challenge them during choice time. I teach an amazing class of twenty-five, first graders in the South Bronx.
Many of my students are English language learners and children with special needs.
Most qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my students are creative, thoughtful and eager learners, and much of their knowledge this year has been expressed through their play and self-exploration. It has been so exciting to see them fully engaged each day as they learn through collaboration and inquiry with their peers.
My Project
Many of my students are unable to continue their reading over the summer because they lack access to books. The libraries in the area have shortened their hours and bookstores are nowhere to be found. These books will go home to my students over the summer and become a permanent part of their home libraries. The Fly Guy titles, as well as these highly engaging books by their favorite author, Eric Carle, have become favorites in our library this year, and I know my students will be so excited to take their favorite titles home. In this way, my student's growth as readers will continue over the summer. In other words, summer slide could be a thing of the past! Having favorite books from school will encourage my students to want to expand their home libraries and keep reading at the forefront of their minds in the midst of all their summer activities.
Imagine spending an entire summer at home with nothing to read.
Imagine how much learning would be lost and how much harder the next grade would be because of it. I want to stop summer slide.
