My students need access to a variety of high-interest books to read over the summer in order to continue to improve their literacy and language skills and prevent "summer slide."
My school can be described as a global learning community, with approximately 40 home languages and cultures represented in preschool through 6th grade.
Our classrooms are very reflective of the diverse experiences and needs of our school. It can be estimated that approximately 25% of students receive English Language Learner services, approximately 25% receive free or reduced lunch, and 11% of students receive special education services in the 2017-2018 school year.
My Project
Research indicates that students who don’t read or read infrequently during the summer break see their reading abilities stagnate or decline. For students from low-income families, studies suggest that if they don’t read over the summer, they are much more likely to fall behind, widening the “achievement gap.”
The “summer slide” can be avoided by ensuring that children have access to engaging books and are able to read every day.
This project is intended to help put as many engaging books into the hands of at-risk and low-income students as possible so that they will feel encouraged and motivated to read every day over the summer months. Book bags will be created for students, based on their interest and reading ability. Students will be able to take their books home to read over the summer.
