Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school with an incredibly diverse population. We are over 50% Hispanic, with a large population that identifies as Asian, Turkish, Pakistani, Syrian, Persian, Polish, Egyptian, or another minority ethnicity.
We also have over 20 varsity sports at our school, including track and field, tennis, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, baseball, softball, hockey, cheerleading, swimming, football, cross country, and bowling.
I am also a mentor for our FIRST Robotics Team. I am in charge of our business plan and our judged awards along with two other business mentors. Each season, we have to write an extensive business plan and present our findings to the judges. The FIRST Robotics Team is composed of 75 members who are as diverse as our school population, with 40 new members this season.
We have an award-winning school for visual and performing arts [SVPA] here at our school. We train our students in public speaking, dance, acting, singing, and other musical instruments. We build our own sets for our plays and work with professionals in the industry.
My Project
Our FIRST Robotics Team, FRC 3314, The Mechanical Mustangs, is in need of additional silver suitcases. We have a team set of suitcases that have been worn out over time. Many of the wheels have fallen off after much use and over 100 trips on airplanes, buses, and trains.
When we travel as a team, it is important to look like a team - by having the same exact suitcase, we not only look professional, but it gives our students recognized as a varsity sport in airports.
Individuals ask us who we are and we are able to explain our robotics program to them. We are also able to make our school proud and help our young people feel pride in our school and our team.
Another advantage of having the exact same suitcase is that as the mentor, I don't have to worry about the different pieces of luggage my students will bring, or even if they have luggage at all. It no longer becomes an issue. Everyone carries the same bag and it makes it much easier for us to see all of our luggage, not look for other people's random bags, and easily identify our bags if we, unfortunately, have to gate check them.
This is Part 1 of a 3 part project to get a total of 36 bags.
