Suicide Prevention

My Students

I teach a class that focuses on suicide prevention and mental health. In the class, students learn about the warning signs of suicide and how to refer at-risk students so they can get the help they need. Students also learn the connection between mental health and suicide and how to break the stigma.

Almost all of the students in the class have had a personal experience with suicide.

Several have had friends die by suicide. Because of their experiences, students are committed to learning how they can help their family and friends get the help they need so they don't lose them to suicide.

My Project

The pandemic has affected students of all ages in all areas of their lives. Not only have they suffered academically, but their mental health has also been greatly affected. In addition, many have forgotten or never learned, how to be kind. My students have been learning about suicide warning signs and the types of things that affect mental health. Things like bullying and social media.

The students want to share their anti-suicide message with others.

They have prepared presentations for students of all ages, elementary, middle, and high school. In addition to educating, we would like to be able to leave little tokens with the students to whom we present. Tokens that will help them remember that they matter, that someone cares about them, and they, in turn, should care about others. If our presentation helps prevent even one student from hurting him/herself, we will have been successful!
