First I have to say that my students are awesome. They come to my classroom ready to experience and experiment with art. Even though they only have a limited background in art they love the opportunity to be artists not just students for a specific part of their day. Seeing their energy gives me the frive to make my art class the highlight of their school day
I have BIG IDEAS for my art program but I just don't have the money to do all the things I want.
With their limited experiences, they are excited to learn and do things they have never done before. I love to see their first impressions when they enter my room. I love seeing them come in and sit at the art tables in awe because they know that this not a traditional classroom and they will not do traditional things.
My Project
My students have not had the opportunity to be enriched in the arts. Schools no longer have the resources or time to allow students to experience art. I'm lucky that my school administrator believes that our students deserve a balanced education. However we don't have the extra funding to extend our art education. My students come to class wanting to learn and experiment with art.
Using Visual Arts to teach about a certain cultural group in the classroom is one simple way to enrich curriculum as well as making life long connections to the world around us.
Educators can help their students learn about and appreciate the similarities and differences in people around the globe through exposure and hands on projects. Having students learn about Día de los Muertos and sugar skulls in the classroom is a valuable learning experience. The supplies I requested are materials needed to make and decorate sugar skulls. The meringue powder is the glue to keep the sugar together. I have the molds already and have administrative support for the sugar. BUT.. the powder is expensive and for 200 skulls a large amount is needed. The beads are for decoration. I already have a commitment from my administrator for powdered sugar and I have a parent donating the icing gel to make the frosting. The cardboard containers are for organization purposes, a container to decorate and transport your finished skull. Through this project and your donations students will create something original and learn about a another culture.
