My students are in a second grade co-taught class with special education students. They attend a school in a high-needs, inner-city district in Upstate New York. The school is located in an urban community, with a high rate of poverty. Our district is low on resources and as a result, many supplies need to be purchased by individual teachers. My students are eager and interested in learning new things, yet our district's lack of resources hold them back from learning to their full potential and becoming as engaged in their education as they could be. My goal is that the students become a community of independent learners and help push each other to grow.
My Project
My students often come to class without the basic supplies necessary due to high poverty rates and homelessness. For many of them, without the proper tools to succeed it is difficult to be organized and engage in classroom activities. Providing them with markers, color pencils, pencils, a class pencil sharpener, clipboards, cleaning supplies, notebooks, and glue sticks will allow my students to engage in projects immediately.
These supplies will allow students to create projects to display their knowledge.
I can plan lessons around student choice without the fear of not having enough notebooks, crayons, or markers for all of my students. Giving students basic school supplies sets my students and myself up for a year of success in a stress-free learning environment.
