If you walked into our school in the morning, you would be greeted by smiling faces of students who enjoy being at school. After students eat breakfast, they are greeted by their teachers at the door every morning and the learning begins. After the principal has walked around to every room to greet each class, he enthusiastically starts announcements, which he always ends with our school philosophy: Do the right thing, treat people right, and value our learning.
At our schools, the students truly understand these guidelines and demonstrate them throughout their daily routines.
Setting high expectations is extremely important to our school, especially since we have a lot of students who do not have structure at home. In my class of 19, about 80% of our school includes students who are on free/reduced lunch plans, and 4 of the 19 attend the ELL program weekly. Despite our students' challenges, my students enjoy being apart of a safe, learning environment. Our school and classroom community make kids want to come to school everyday and I can see the joy on their faces everyday. These 4th graders continue to impress me with their knowledge and dedication each day!
My Project
While many of my students do well in desks, about a third of my students have trouble sitting still in class. These flexible seating options, especially the contemporary stand up desks, will allow the students who need a more sensory work space become more successful while they work.
We also need more space in the classroom for collaborative learning.
With these new seating options, we will be able to remove larger desks and have more space for students to engage in conversations. We work a lot in small groups and this will open up more space for students to meet and discuss their learning!
