I teach in a self-contained classroom. I have students ranging from 9th to 12th grade. I teach my students life skills that they need to be successful. Some of the life skills I teach are personal hygiene, money concept, and everyday living skills (washing clothes, microwaving food, etc.)
My students are all very unique in their own way.
My students have different learning abilities. They also have different needs. However, one thing that they all have in common is that they all need time to cool down or relax. When a certain concept becomes overwhelming or too tough for them, I allow my students to take time to calm down. Each and every single one of my students benefit from cool down time and this helps them to better their thinking and understanding.
My Project
My students can often become overwhelmed and need time to distress or unwind. This swing would benefit not just one but all of my students. They would have time to use the swing and decompress so they can get their brain ready to learn.
The sensory swing can be very versatile within the classroom.
When my students have independent reading, they would have the ability to read in the swing. This extra sensory stimulation would benefit their learning.
I like to describe sensory stimulation as the following. Sensory stimulation is like scratching an itch that needs to be scratched. The individuals may experience discomfort or be uncomfortable reading in a standard chair, so if the students had the option to read in the sensory swing this could greatly impact their learning.
