My school is in an urban district serving a very diverse population. Eighty-one percent of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. I teach a fifth grade class of 20 students. My students need to have the opportunity to find the way they learn best. Although traditional desks and chairs are available in my classroom, students enjoy having the choice of where they learn. Voice and Choice is a huge motto in our school district and empowering my students to make independent choices that will impact the success of their learning is invaluable.
My students would benefit from the opportunity to choose where they would do their best learning. Although the traditional desk and chair are available in my classroom, some students find that having different choices of where to work throughout the day helps them to be successful. Having floor seats and lap desks allows students to move around the room and find a place where they will do their beat learning. In our school district, “Voice and Choice” is a motto that we strive for everyday. Allowing students to have the independence of choosing where and how they will do their best learning is setting the building blocks of future decision making.
