My students are energetic fifth graders that need movement throughout the day. I understand the need for movement in the class for my students to be successful. My classes are made up of students of all learning levels. Not every child learns the same way and this includes sitting straight in a desk.
In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and through our shared experiences.
My students are willing and eager to work with each other. They are diverse learners, but are encouraging and supportive of each other.
Through alternative seating my students are able to build community and find a learning space that makes them successful in their learner.
My Project
By having alternative seating in the classroom, my students can make choices of what works best for them. They can also move into groups easily, so they can collaborate together on projects. Since they are fifth graders, I try to empower my students as they make choices in their learning that will help them become successful. Learning to make choices and knowing what works best for them is a foundation towards becoming successful in middle school and as young adults.
Along with choices, the student are able to sit around the room in a comfortable spot as they engage in their learning.
Who really likes to sit still all day? Not me.... My students are more engaged in their work due to being able to move throughout the classroom. This project would give them more choices for how they best learn. These choices could be sitting at a regular table, a high table, a low table, in bean bags or on pillows. My students can move the bean bags to any location within the classroom to sit and complete work or form a group for class projects. The pillows allow my students to sit on a soft spot or even lay on the floor. The low chairs with backs allow the students to sit alone or in groups. They also will fit comfortably at our low table. My students will also be able to bring all of the items to the front of the room and sit in them as we work on the smart board together.
