Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our school are from low income families, and are at a disadvantage due to their socioeconomic backgrounds. My classroom is full of energetic Kinder-5th grade Resource students. Many of my students have Autism and ADHD, and movement is necessary for them to focus. Therefore, I encourage a lot of movement and rotations within my room, because I know it is difficult to have them sit still for too long.
I like to empower my students to have their own choice in everything they do.
By giving them the opportunity of flexible seating, it will allow them to increase focus and concentration to do well on difficult tasks, as well as limit behaviors that are a result of sitting still for too long.
My Project
My students come from a low socio-economic background and are attending a Title 1 elementary school. Many of my students have Autism, ADHD, SPD, and Emotional Disabilities. Sitting the traditional way in a standard chair at a desk is no easy task for these students. They desperately want to be successful, but something is impacting their ability to learn.
Allowing my students the opportunity to choose their seats will empower them to be successful in the classroom.
By giving them the opportunity to have a seating arrangement that fits their needs will allow them to feel successful in difficult day-to-day tasks. These students often tend to display un-safe behaviors such as tilting their chairs, tapping/playing with pencils, and or constantly being out of their seat, and this is due to their need for movement. Allowing them to have a kick-band at the bottom of their chair or a balance ball will give them the movement they need to quietly listen to their teacher and participate in groups while minimizing distractions and behavior in the classroom. Please help empower my students to feel successful with their educational journeys.
