Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a second and third grade Special Education-Self Contained class of 12 students. They are a group of wonderful learners with diverse learning disabilities and needs who come from so many different backgrounds. My students come from low-income households in the Bronx and due to various circumstances as well as issues associated with COVID-19, have trouble accessing materials and resources.
My Project
Many of my students live in households with other siblings who are also learning remotely as well as parents who are working from home. The environmental noise is often distracting and prevents students from being able to stay focused during live sessions. Like class time, homework is also done virtually. Students need to listen to stories, instructions, or record themselves speaking. Headphones will help allow them to stay focus and complete tasks efficiently.
Each student in my class has a diverse set of needs.
They benefit from schedules, checklists, Thinking Maps, and learning templates to help them organize their learning, stay on task, and practice their learnings independently. Sending home laminated copies of these items will allow them to be academically and socially successful.
Our students are AMAZING learners! They go through regular school supplies very often. Parents do not always have the means to continuously provide basic items. Being able to send some of these items home helps our children to stay motivated knowing that they have what they need to be successful.
