My Students
I teach the best students in the world! I'm not just saying that; they really are quite incredible! Some of my students have overcome so much in their short lives already while others are just trying to figure this whole "school" thing out. I love my students- their personalities, their ambition, their humor, their endeavors, their stories, and their hearts.
I want my students to be comfortable in their classroom.
When my students relax, they are able to focus on learning.
My Project
Over the summer, I embarked on a big project for my classroom: flexible seating. The idea of flexible seating centers around student choice in their learning environment. It aims to meet physical needs. It aims to empower. And, it does. After spending the past half year using seating choices, I can say that I have seen a huge difference.
Not only do the students LOVE having seating choices, but it helps me troubleshoot off-task behavior by being proactive.
This year I have students that are on the move more than I have ever experienced before. They need to have non-conventional seating choices to meet their non-conventional needs.
I'll be honest. When I began my flexible seating journey this summer, I wasn't completely sure what I was getting into. I did hours upon hours of research. I joined support groups and forums for teachers to share experiences and bounce ideas off of each other. I was given seating donations, navigated sales, traveled to out of town stores, and created Donors Choose projects. One by one, I checked off my seating shopping list with the help of others.
The packages were delivered, seating assembled, and everything was ready for the school year. Parents came to view my classroom and were blown away. I'll never forget that night- the encouragement, the excitement. Then, the school year started. It took strategic integration and high expectations, but the dynamic of my classroom began to quickly change with the use of different seating choices. This change was tremendous. Students rose to my expectations and with pride took ownership of their seating.
Today, they continue to thrive with flexible seating! But, we are still in need of a few items: six stools and three lap desks. Will you help us continue our journey?
