My class is not only culturally diverse; the students also come from varying levels of academics, economic situations, behavioral and social skills. I have a variety of special needs students in my class, along with kids with behavior challenges. We house a behavior program at our school where the students are mainstreamed into the neighborhood classrooms. We are a title 1 school. Our school is the 17th most culturally diverse school in the nation with children from all over the world. We have a strong focus on social and emotional learning at our school due to our changing environment to meet the needs of the students district wide.
Our learning goals consist of helping every student to be successful in meeting their needs.
My students struggle with getting their basic needs met. Therefore, I am always striving to inspire, challenge and empower my students on a daily basis.
My Project
I will use the Secret Stories daily to help my students understand WHY letters make the sounds that they do. The Secret Stories will be used as to help my students understand sound symbol relationships through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic means. I have seen this program work with my own daughter who is in kindergarten, and I want to be able to pass that success onto my own students and the other students in kindergarten by getting a second kit for the other classroom.
Donors to this project should know that they will be giving students strategies to change their whole lives by learning to read!
Donors will be helping students learn to read in a way that I never learned as a kid. I only learned memorization, so actually teaching ways for the students to know and remember how and why words are broken down will be empowering
