"It always seems impossible until its done." - Nelson Mandela
I teach third grade in a high poverty inner-city school in Indianapolis.
All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Several of our students take part in the Nutrition Club. This is a program at our school where students take home a backpack full of food for their families for the weekend. Many of our students are being raised in a single parent home or by grandparents. The technology at our school is lacking. High stakes testing is being done on computers, but our students do not have access to computers on a daily basis to prepare for these assessments. I have six computers in my room for over 20 students. Usually 4 of the six will function without difficulty. I also have access to a computer lab for 1 hour a week. Again, many of the computers often do not work. Assessing skills with paper and pencil is different than assessing with the use of a computer.
With the help of DonorsChoose, I was able to get four new iPads for my students. I am now requesting one more iPad to help meet the needs of more of my students by giving them practice with the tools that are used to measure their level of achievement. They will be able to practice scrolling back and forth in reading passages to reread and find evidence for their answers.
Not only will the iPads help my students with reading but with math. My goal is to have enough iPads in the classroom to make it apart of their learning centers. They will feel more comfortable with the technology used and be able to concentrate more on the task at hand.
Your generous donation will give my students a fighting chance to be successful on district and statewide assessments.
Our students continue to do poorly on assessments and lack of available technology should not be what keeps them from being successful.
